Dictaphones are old recording devices that were used to capture and play back speech. At the time, these were quite the marvel of technology and it made many people’s lives a lot easier. Dictaphones were a way for people to speak and then that speech would be preserved. The individual could then play it back whenever they wanted or type out the speech or whatever it was at their leisure. Of course, Dictaphones could also be used for recreational purposes and not just for business pursuits.

The Dictaphone is actually an official product name for something that is used to record speech and play it back. When considering the history of Dictaphone one must understand that it starts pretty much when Edison invented a recording device in 1881. Well, that is when he got the patent. In 1888, Edison and Tainter formed a company to sell these recording devices. It was sold in 1907 and then again in 1923 when the company became “Dictaphone”.

Now, those early devices that were sold were cutting edge of their time. Now, they are simply antiques. They make great conversation pieces, especially if you manage to find one that still works. If you think about the advancements that have been made in the field over the last 100 years or so, it is quite mind blowing. Seeing something like a Dictaphone may not seem special but it is really where it all began. All of our current recording devices may not have been possible without that invention.

Now, the Dictaphone company still exists but they don’t manufacture those old machines any longer. There simply is no market for it. Now, Dictaphone focuses on creating digital devices. In a way it is fitting. At the time, the company provided the latest technology, and now they are doing the same. Had they not changed with the times, they would be long out of business.

To understand today’s technology it helps to go back into the past. Dictaphones were revolutionary. What started as some people experimenting with different inventions later evolved into something that was much more than that as the technology increased and changed. Dictaphones started it all and they should be given credit for that.
