For the small retail business owner the challenge of continually building sales is never ending.  Those opening a dollar store are in that group.  As one dollar store sales level goal is achieved, a new higher level becomes the next target to be achieved.  Yet after awhile it seems that all the easiest and quickest to occur actions have been taken.  It seems as if there are no simple actions left.  For many store owners and managers all that is required is to take a step back and then look at their store with a fresh new eye for the possibilities.

Often that new examination will enable many new opportunities to appear.  One of the opportunities to examine is the initial appearance of the store when shoppers first walk in.  Does you store emit a warm yet exciting welcome?  Is there just something about that first look that beckons newly arrived shoppers to look at the products in your store?  Read on for 5 great ideas to help you create exactly that vision when opening a dollar store.

#1) Proper lighting.  It seems so obvious, yet many stores seem to be dim and almost poorly lit when you first enter.  Don’t join this club.  Make sure all lights are on and that they work.  Increase the output if your current bulbs aren’t doing the job.  While your don’t need blindly bright lighting, customers must be able to easily see everything.

#2) Dimly lit corners.  Shoppers will deliberately avoid dark, dimly lit corners.  The result is lower sales.  In fact dollar store merchandise displayed in dark corners doesn’t sell well at all.  When opening a dollar store be sure to add spot lighting to brighten things up if there are dark locations in your store.

#3) Bright signs.  Just as good lighting makes dollar store sales, so too will having bright colors throughout your store.  Consider adding aisle product signs that are brightly colored.  Use brightly colored signs for end caps and specials or new arrivals in every aisle.  Don’t forget to add brightly colored signs and banners focused on each new season and holiday.

#4) Brightly colored packaging.  You have a few short seconds for various dollar store merchandise items to grab the attentions of shoppers as they pass by.  Brightly colored packages make huge strides toward doing exactly that.  Add to your sales by placing brightly packaged dollar store merchandise on end caps and bulk displays.  Then watch the sales of those items explode to new heights.

#5) Brightly colored pre-packaged bulk displays.  One easy strategy to add a burst of color throughout your store is to always be on the lookout for pre-packaged bulk displays of dollar store merchandise.  Manufacturers know bright colors add to dollar store sales, so often they make it easy by selecting colors that do the job for you.

To your success when opening a dollar store!
